Thanks for the free article, Chris.  Read this while waiting at the dentist for my daughter yesterday. I hardly ever read this kind of thing. It reminds me how intelligent some people are. Not all of us have brains capable of that. But it's an engaging read. I can appreciate the intelligence in how he filters through and connects all those concepts, kind of like appreciating the genius of Bach even though I don't know much about music. With my simple-minded approach I put his message in the we're all going to be separated from what we hold dear, joined with what we loathe, experience injury and or decay and die. And maybe the cycle continue perpetually from there. On the other hand, it's humanly possilbe to appreciate that as the play of empty magical appearances.

Just wanted to say I appreciated the article, and that got sucked into my reducing valve.

Mark, I've learned that reading Peter Watts is seldom an uplifting experience. Interesting, challenging, and worthwhile... but not uplifting.

Great read.  This is inspiring me to read more of his works.  I can see why you enjoy reading him so much and are captivated by your studies of AI/self awareness/consciousness.  It is primary and fascinating.  I like how Peter is able to distill and summarize the philosophers of our time so easily.

An inherent need/desire for efficiency and safety = consciousness? Sounds about right. I've been feeling like an oversized DishBrain lately... :)
